Greenshot Alternative

Greenshot had a code execution vulnerability. Here is what IT teams switched to.

CVE-2025-59050 โ€” a high-severity deserialization flaw โ€” was disclosed in September 2025. A PoC was published two days later. Many teams are still auditing or replacing Greenshot. Nabist covers everything Greenshot does, adds video recording and better annotations, and has no known CVEs.

CVE-2025-59050 โ€” High severity (CVSS 8.4)

Greenshot versions 1.3.300 and earlier contain an unsafe .NET deserialization vulnerability in its Windows IPC handler. Any local process can send a crafted WM_COPYDATA message to Greenshot's main window and execute arbitrary code inside the signed, trusted Greenshot.exe process โ€” bypassing application control policies. A public proof-of-concept was released September 18, 2025, two days after disclosure.

Disclosed: September 16, 2025PoC Published: September 18, 2025Fixed: v1.3.301No workaround โ€” update required

The patch is available in 1.3.301. However, many enterprise environments move slowly on desktop tool updates, and security teams performing audits are often replacing the tool rather than chasing patch compliance. If you are in that process, this page is for you.

Where Greenshot Wins (and Where It Falls Short)

An honest look at what Greenshot does well and where you will hit a wall.

Greenshot is genuinely good

Free, lightweight, and fast. The core screenshot workflow is solid: hotkey, region select, annotate, copy. If screenshots are your entire need, Greenshot earns its reputation and costs nothing.

No video at all

Greenshot has zero video capability. No recording, no trimming, no voiceover. The moment a teammate asks for a screencast walkthrough instead of a screenshot, you need a different tool entirely.

Practically Windows-only

There is a macOS App Store version, but it is a third-party port not maintained by the Greenshot team and last updated in 2019. Mixed-OS teams end up with a fragmented toolset.

A real CVE in 2025

CVE-2025-59050 (CVSS 8.4) allowed local code execution inside the signed Greenshot.exe process with no elevated privileges required. The fix is in v1.3.301. Nabist has no known CVEs.

What Nabist Adds Beyond Greenshot

Greenshot covers screenshots. Nabist covers the whole workflow.

The same fast screenshot workflow

One keystroke, screenshot on clipboard, ready to paste. Everything you liked about Greenshot, plus more when you need it.

Annotation that goes beyond shapes

Numbered steps, arrows, callouts, text boxes. Greenshot covers basic shapes. Nabist has everything you need to explain something clearly.

Video recording and editing

Record your screen with audio and microphone, trim the dead air, add a voiceover, and share a clean clip. Greenshot has no video capability at all.

Auto-compress for chat

Nabist auto-compresses screenshots to fit Slack, Teams, Discord, and email limits. No more file-too-large errors when you paste.

REST API + Stream Deck

Trigger captures from scripts or a Stream Deck button. Built for power users who already automate everything else.

Lifetime updates included

Your $80 covers every future update. No renewal, no maintenance fee.

"I used Greenshot for years and liked it. The problem was the moment I needed to record a walkthrough I had to switch to a different tool. Nabist handles both, and the annotation is genuinely better. $80 once was an easy call."
